Five Remakes of Classic Horror Games To Check Out
In no particular order or ranking, here are five remakes of iconic horror games that I think every fan of the horror and survival-horror genres should check out! And I promise there are no major spoilers ahead.
Resident Evil 4
Original release date — January 11, 2005
Remake release date — March 24, 2023
Originally released in 2005, this outstanding remake of one of the most praised games in the Resident Evil franchise came to PC and present-day consoles in 2023. The Resident Evil 4 remake follows Leon S. Kennedy, a fan-favorite of the franchise who was introduced in Resident Evil 2. He is a survivor of the Raccoon City tragedy in RE2 and now works as a federal agent under direct Presidential command.
This game takes place in an unnamed village in Spain and it’s Leon’s duty to rescue the President’s daughter, Ashley Graham, from a cult called Los Iluminados. This remake features the return of your favorite characters from the original game, reimagined boss fights and locations, and no health meter to maintain for Ashley.
Capcom remade Resident Evil (1998) in 2002. Remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 were released in 2019 and 2020 respectively. This trio serves as a great introduction to the franchise for a new generation of fans.
Silent Hill 2
Original release date — September 25, 2001
Remake release date — October 8, 2024
The remake of Silent Hill 2 (2001) remains pretty faithful to the original storyline, but moves away from fixed-camera viewpoints to an over-the-shoulder perspective. Locked camera angles were a hallmark in numerous early 2000s horror games. A goal of the new viewpoint is to bring players closer to the action and terrifying monsters James fights.
You can find a total of eight different endings; three original endings, three extra endings to find in a new game plus run, and two new endings you can only discover in this remake.
Get ready for a new chapter in the Silent Hill series! Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f follows a brand new character, Shimizu Hinako, into the fog engulfing her hometown. I am eagerly awaiting the release date announcement for this game.
Dead Space
Original release date — October 13, 2008
Remake release date — January 27, 2023
Strong arguments have been made that Dead Space is the best science-fiction horror franchise out there. Creator Glen Schofield took inspiration from classic sci-fi horror films like Alien and The Thing as well as Resident Evil 4 to create the games.
Layers of Fear
Original release date — February 15, 2016
Remake release date — June 15, 2023
The only remake on this list that happened less than a decade after the original.
Alone in the Dark
Original release date — August 3 1992
Remake release date — March 20, 2024
Hold up, is that David Harbour? The Stranger Things actor makes an appearance in this remake as private investigator, Edward Carnby.
