Army Offers GTA 6 Gaming Days as Reenlistment Incentive
Okay, this is “Carnage Guild,” aka Donald Kipkin. I’m not going to comment on what I think this means about the state of our country or our military. Nope. I’m just going to give you the facts, sprinkle in the perspective of somebody who has actually served, and after you finish reading this article, you can reach your own conclusions.
Because when I first saw this story, I honestly thought somebody was screwing around. Apparently, they weren’t.
REENLIST AND… GAME ON?
FORT STEWART, Ga. — In what has to be one of the weirdest military retention incentives I have seen in recent memory, the Army’s 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart is offering eligible soldiers a special four-day pass timed around the release of Grand Theft Auto VI if they reenlist during the program’s eligibility window.
Yes. You read that correctly.
Reenlist and get time off to play GTA VI.

Eligible soldiers who sign a reenlistment contract between August 1 and November 14, 2026 can receive the pass. To qualify, soldiers must extend their service by at least two years. About 20 of roughly 130 eligible soldiers had already selected the incentive when Army officials discussed the program publicly.
Twenty! That immediately makes me wonder: what exactly are the eligibility requirements? And more importantly… how much does four days of GTA really matter when the other side of that transaction is additional YEARS of your life?
FOUR DAYS VS. YEARS OF YOUR LIFE
Look, I served. So I’m looking at this differently than somebody who has never worn the uniform. Military service isn’t a normal job. When you reenlist, you’re making a commitment that can affect where you live, where your family lives, what happens to your career and, depending on world events and your assignment, potentially a hell of a lot more.
Come on. For me personally, this is a ridiculous enticement. Maybe the soldiers who selected it were already planning to reenlist. That would make considerably more sense. If you’ve already decided you’re staying in and somebody tells you that you can pick a special pass around GTA VI’s launch? HELL YEAH. Take the pass. I’d take it too.

But if GTA VI is actually what pushed you across the finish line and convinced you to extend your military service? Brother… we need to have a conversation.
Because GTA VI will still be sitting there after your enlistment ends. Vice City isn’t going anywhere. Lucia isn’t going anywhere. Jason isn’t going anywhere. Hell, knowing Rockstar, by the time some of these guys finish their next enlistment we’ll probably still be waiting for GTA VII.
THE ARMY HAS ALWAYS USED INCENTIVES — BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT
Let’s be fair. Military reenlistment incentives aren’t new. Bonuses. Schools. Assignments. Duty stations. Special training. Time off. Career opportunities. Those things have been part of retention forever.
But GTA VI? That is where this becomes fascinating. This isn’t some generic morale pass. This thing is tied to one specific video game — and not just any game. We’re talking about probably the most anticipated video game release on the planet.
“You guys want GTA? Fine. Reenlist.”
From a marketing standpoint? It got everybody’s attention. I’m writing about it. You’re reading about it. Soldiers are talking about it. Gaming sites are talking about it. National news organizations are talking about it. So while I may think the incentive itself is ridiculous, whoever came up with the idea definitely understood one thing: know your audience.
THE GAME EVERYONE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR

And let’s not pretend they’re dangling some random game here. This is Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games has GTA VI scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The game takes us back to Vice City and into the fictional state of Leonida, following Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong and pulls them into a criminal conspiracy.
The anticipation surrounding this game is absolutely insane. And I’m part of the problem. I’ve been waiting YEARS for this damn game. And here’s the embarrassing part: I STILL HAVEN’T COMPLETELY FINISHED GTA V.
Yes. I know. Don’t email me. Don’t message me. Don’t revoke my gamer card. I’m working on it. Maybe.
YOU GAVE ME THE BOX… WHERE’S MY DAMN DISC?!
Now here’s where Rockstar has me irritated. Rockstar’s own store says the physical version is a “Code-in-Box” product. You get a physical box, but there is no game disc inside it. Instead, you redeem a code and download the game.
You gave me the BOX…
WHERE’S MY DAMN DISC?!
For somebody like me who grew up BUYING games, collecting games, putting games on a shelf and actually owning physical media? A code inside a box isn’t exactly making me jump for joy. That’s an entirely different rant. And trust me… I’m coming back to that one.
ROCKSTAR IS ABOUT TO TURN THE HYPE MACHINE UP AGAIN

Rockstar has an official Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look scheduled for August 27. So imagine being stationed at Fort Stewart. You’re already watching trailers. You’re already talking about GTA VI in the barracks. Your friends are talking about it. The internet won’t shut up about it. November 19 is circled on your calendar.
“Soooooo… how would you like four days off?”
That’s diabolical. I’ll give them that.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF RETENTION STRATEGY
The bigger story here isn’t really GTA VI. It’s how institutions are beginning to understand gaming. Video games aren’t some niche hobby anymore. Gaming is entertainment. Gaming is culture. Gaming is social interaction. And for millions of younger Americans — including service members — it is one of their primary forms of entertainment.
Does that make four days of GTA VI worth additional military service? Hell no. Not to me. But maybe that’s not actually the point. If the soldier was already reenlisting, then this becomes a cool perk. If the soldier wasn’t reenlisting and GTA VI changed his mind? That’s a very different conversation.
And I’d love to talk to that soldier. Seriously. WWLTP needs that interview.
CARNAGE GUILD’S FINAL WORD
So where do I land? The Army offered soldiers a four-day pass timed around one of the biggest gaming releases in history. At least some soldiers accepted it. The Army got attention. The soldiers get time off. Rockstar gets another bizarre chapter added to the already unbelievable GTA VI hype train.
Everybody wins… I guess?
But I keep coming back to the same thought. You’re potentially talking about years of your life in exchange for a perk measured in days. Having served myself, that’s the part I can’t get past.
Maybe I’m old. Maybe military culture has changed. Maybe gaming culture has become so powerful that this is simply what retention looks like in 2026. Or maybe somebody at Fort Stewart is a marketing genius who figured out that the easiest way to get soldiers into the retention office was to put the words GRAND THEFT AUTO VI on the memo.
I’m not going to tell you what this says about the military. I’m not going to tell you what it says about our country. I told you that at the beginning.
Would YOU reenlist for a four-day GTA VI pass?
Think about it.
This is Donald “Carnage Guild” Kipkin.
I’ll see you in Vice City.
Eventually.
Assuming I finish GTA V first.
