Remembering Hayden Panettiere
From Destiny Islands to Blackwood Mountain — a tribute to the actress whose voice, face and performances became part of gaming history.
There are actors who appear in games. There are voice actors who give a character dialogue. And then there are performers whose work becomes permanently attached to the memories we have of playing.
HAYDEN PANETTIERE WAS ONE OF THOSE PERFORMERS.
BABY, think about the journey. She started contributing to video games as a child, voiced one of the emotional anchors of Kingdom Hearts, stepped into one of PlayStation's defining interactive horror experiences, and decades later returned to Blackwood Mountain.
For television audiences, she was Claire Bennet. For movie audiences, she was Kirby Reed. For country-music television fans, she was Juliette Barnes.
BUT GAMERS HAD KAIRI. GAMERS HAD XION. GAMERS HAD SAM.
A Gaming Career That Started Early
Hayden's gaming credits stretch back to 1998, when she voiced Dot in the video-game adaptation of A Bug's Life. That was followed by narration work on Disney's Princess Fashion Boutique and the role of Tati in Sony's The Mark of Kri.
But 2002 changed everything. That year, a strange and beautiful collaboration between Square and Disney gave players Kingdom Hearts. And Hayden became the English voice of Kairi.

Kairi: The Heart of a Generation
If you were there in 2002, you remember how unusual Kingdom Hearts felt. Final Fantasy DNA. Disney worlds. Keyblades. Heartless. Donald Duck yelling at you while you tried to save the universe.
And right at the emotional center of Sora and Riku's story was Kairi.
Hayden gave Kairi warmth. She gave her sincerity. She gave the character the sound of a friend you desperately wanted to get home to.
She returned as Kairi in Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, with her performances also preserved through later HD collections. Then in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Hayden voiced Xion as well.
ONE FRANCHISE. TWO CHARACTERS TIED TO THE VERY IDEA OF MEMORY AND THE HEART.

Then Came Until Dawn
And OH BABY — now we leave Destiny Islands and head straight into the snow.
In 2015, Until Dawn arrived on PlayStation 4 and asked players a terrifying question:
WHAT IF YOUR HORROR MOVIE SURVIVED OR DIED BASED ON YOUR DECISIONS?
Hayden portrayed Samantha “Sam” Giddings through voice and performance work. Sam became one of the game's most recognizable characters: intelligent, resourceful, determined, and—if the player did their job—one of Blackwood Mountain's survivors.
This wasn't a traditional performance where the audience simply sat back and watched. WE controlled what happened.

Sam Became a Gaming Final Girl
Horror has always had its final girls. Cinema gave us characters who endure after everybody else starts making very bad decisions. Until Dawn gave gaming its own version of that tradition.
Sam could be brave without feeling invincible. The performance worked because Hayden sold fear and determination at the same time.
When she was being hunted, you felt the panic. When she had to keep completely still, suddenly the controller in your hands felt like the most dangerous object in the room.
THAT'S INTERACTIVE ACTING, BABY!

She Came Back to Blackwood Mountain
In 2024, Until Dawn was rebuilt for PlayStation 5 and PC. Hayden's Sam remained central to the experience, and the remake included an additional post-credit scene featuring the character.
Think about that timeline: 1998 — Dot. 2002 — Kairi. 2012 — Xion. 2015 — Sam. 2024 — Sam again.
That is more than a quarter-century of gaming history connected to one performer.

The Gaming World Remembered Her
After her death, the official Kingdom Hearts team honored Hayden's work as Kairi and Xion. Supermassive Games also paid tribute to the woman behind Sam and the contribution her performance made to one of horror gaming's best-known protagonists.
These weren't footnotes in a television star's résumé.
THEY WERE CHARACTERS PEOPLE BUILT WORLDS AROUND.

Thank You, Hayden
Thirty-six years is not enough time. But a person's legacy isn't measured only in years. It's measured in what remains.
Somewhere right now, somebody is starting Kingdom Hearts for the first time. They are meeting Kairi on Destiny Islands.
Somebody else is starting Until Dawn. They don't know what's waiting on Blackwood Mountain. They don't know who will survive.
And through those experiences, Hayden's work begins again.
THE CONTROLLER GETS PICKED UP. THE GAME STARTS. THE CHARACTER LIVES AGAIN.
From Dot and Tati... to Kairi and Xion... to Samantha “Sam” Giddings...
THANK YOU, HAYDEN PANETTIERE.
Thank you for the voices. Thank you for the performances. Thank you for helping games feel human.
WWLTP Remembers Hayden Panettiere
The performer may be gone, but her work remains every time somebody returns to Destiny Islands or tries to survive one more night on Blackwood Mountain.
From Destiny Islands to Blackwood Mountain — the characters live on.
KAIRI. XION. SAM. FOREVER PART OF GAMING.
