Remembering Sam Neill

The man who made us believe dinosaurs walked again — and whose Dr. Alan Grant crossed from movie screens into generations of video games.

There are actors. There are movie stars. There are icons. And then there are those rare people who become permanently connected to a moment in your childhood.

SAM NEILL WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!

BABY, let me tell you something — when Dr. Alan Grant took off those sunglasses and stared across Isla Nublar at a living, breathing dinosaur in Jurassic Park, an entire generation stared right along with him.

It wasn't just a movie anymore.

DINOSAURS WERE REAL!

At least for two hours in that theater, they were. And Sam Neill helped make us believe every second of it.

“He didn’t just survive Jurassic Park. He became the face gamers wanted to become when WE entered the park.”

Dr. Alan Grant Was Different

Alan Grant wasn't Superman. He wasn't a soldier carrying enough firepower to take on an island. He didn't have superpowers.

He was a paleontologist. A scientist. A man who understood dinosaurs better than almost anybody — and suddenly discovered that everything he'd spent his career studying was walking around right in front of him.

That's what made Grant such a fantastic hero. When everybody else saw the greatest theme park ever created, Grant understood something was wrong.

THESE WEREN'T ATTRACTIONS. THESE WERE ANIMALS.

And Mother Nature doesn't care about your admission ticket, baby!

Welcome to Jurassic Park — Now You're Playing It

1993 wasn't merely the year Jurassic Park conquered movie theaters. Jurassic Park invaded gaming too.

AND IF YOU WERE A GAMER DURING THAT ERA — OH BABY, YOU REMEMBER!

The Super Nintendo version put players in control of Alan Grant as they explored Isla Nublar, collected dinosaur eggs, entered dangerous facilities and tried to survive a park that had completely fallen apart.

Then came the Sega Genesis version. And Sega basically said: “You want Alan Grant? We've got Alan Grant. But how about playing as a VELOCIRAPTOR too?”

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! THAT WAS 16-BIT GAMING, BABY!

On SNES, gamers became Grant — exploring Isla Nublar while dinosaurs turned every screen into danger.

Millions of kids who watched Sam Neill survive Isla Nublar could now pick up a controller and try surviving it themselves.

That matters. Because Sam Neill's contribution to gaming isn't that he designed a video game.

HE HELPED CREATE THE CHARACTER GAMERS WANTED TO BECOME.

From Hollywood Character to Video-Game Hero

Think about this. Dr. Alan Grant started as a character on a page. Sam Neill gave the movie version a face, a voice, a personality, a walk — and, yes, that legendary hat.

Then game developers transformed that screen identity into something interactive.

Suddenly WE were Grant. WE entered the jungle. WE faced the raptors. WE searched the park. WE ran from dinosaurs.

WE WEREN'T JUST WATCHING JURASSIC PARK ANYMORE — WE WERE PLAYING IT!

The Generations Kept Coming

Alan Grant didn't disappear when the 16-bit era ended. New generations discovered him through later Jurassic games, including LEGO Jurassic World, and then Frontier Developments' Jurassic World Evolution era brought the connection full circle.

Sam Neill himself voiced Dr. Alan Grant in the Return to Jurassic Park content for Jurassic World Evolution, and again in Jurassic World Evolution 2.

Think about how incredible that is.

The kids playing Jurassic Park games in the 1990s grew up. Some had kids of their own. And decades later...

SAM NEILL WAS STILL DR. ALAN GRANT IN THEIR VIDEO GAMES.

A legacy bigger than one mediumNeill's death at age 78 closes an extraordinary acting career, but Alan Grant continues to live across film, games and generations of Jurassic fans.

More Than Jurassic Park

One legendary role shouldn't erase an extraordinary career. Sam Neill gave audiences decades of performances across drama, horror, science fiction, comedy and adventure, with films including Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, The Piano and Event Horizon.

But for gamers — especially the kids of the Jurassic generation — Alan Grant occupies a special place.

The character arrived at exactly the right moment. Movies were getting bigger. Video games were getting more sophisticated. And entertainment franchises were beginning to cross between screens in ways we'd never experienced before.

Jurassic Park was right in the middle of that revolution.

The movie made us want to visit Isla Nublar.

THE GAMES ACTUALLY LET US GO THERE.

ONE LAST CONNECTION TO GAMING

And somehow, Sam Neill's connection with gaming has one more chapter. Before his death, Neill reportedly completed filming a role in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Nintendo's legendary The Legend of Zelda. His role has not officially been disclosed. That almost feels poetic. One of the men who helped turn Jurassic Park from a movie phenomenon into a franchise spanning movies, toys and video games would have one of his final performances connected to one of gaming's most treasured franchises. From dinosaurs... to Hyrule. What a journey.

Thank You, Sam

There is a moment burned into movie history. Grant looks into the distance. He can't believe what he's seeing. Then we see it too.

A dinosaur.

More than three decades later, generations still understand that feeling.

Wonder. Fear. Discovery. Adventure.

That's what Sam Neill gave Jurassic Park. And through the games inspired by that world, gamers didn't simply watch the adventure.

WE GOT TO PARTICIPATE IN IT.

So from everybody who watched Jurassic Park... from everybody who blew into a cartridge hoping it would work... from everybody who guided Grant across Isla Nublar... from everybody who built their own Jurassic World...

And from every gamer who hears those first few notes of the Jurassic Park theme and instantly becomes a kid again...

THANK YOU, SAM NEILL.

Thank you for Dr. Alan Grant. Thank you for the adventure. Thank you for the memories.

WWLTP Remembers Sam Neill

1947–2026

The actor may be gone. The character remains. The movies remain. The games remain. Somewhere, somebody is still picking up a controller and stepping onto Isla Nublar for the very first time.

Now THAT, my friends, is a legacy.

DR. ALAN GRANT FOREVER.
